There is a tendency in Organizations to split their old legacy Systems into a more easy to manage and to maintain small Software Applications. It may be that all these apps are put to run into an internal network of servers, or as it is most common, in the cloud, using a Cloud Provider like AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, etc.

This implementation has its pros and its cons, but if the initial Distributed System Architecture is set correctly, it has much more pros than cons.
